Joe Biden announces the evacuation of       Americans from Sudan.


The President of the United States, Joe Biden, said on Saturday night that the US military is conducting an operation to evacuate American diplomatic personnel from the Sudanese capital, the scene of a bitter civil war. The White House leader added that he has temporarily suspended operations at the US embassy in Khartoum as fighting continues in Sudan .

In a statement, Joe Biden said he receives regular reports from his team on his continued work to help Americans in Sudan to the extent possible and that he is working with allies and partners in that effort. Earlier, Sudan's de facto leader had announced that the governments of the US, UK, France and China were to evacuate their diplomats and citizens from the country as a result of the fighting. Rebels from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan also announced that they had "coordinated" with the United States to evacuate the American embassy. The evacuation of "diplomats and their families" will take place on Sunday morning aboard six planes, the rebels, who have been fighting for two weeks against the Sudanese army, said. Intense clashes have been taking place in Sudan for a week between the forces of the head of the army, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, who has de facto ruled Sudan since the October 2021 coup d'état, and those of the leader of the Rapid Support Forces, Mohamed Hamdan Daglo.

The Sudanese army announced on Friday that it had agreed to a three-day truce from then on to allow Sudanese to celebrate the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr, which ends the holy month of Ramadan. The World Health Organization announced on the same day that 413 people have been killed and 3,551 injured in Sudan since the outbreak of this internal conflict.
