How conservative is CD&V still, now that the party is open to relaxing the abortion law?


How will the traditional, religious CD&V voter react now that the party agrees to (limited) relaxation of the legislation on abortion? According to political scientist Nicolas Bouteca (UGent), this impact will remain limited. "Most people in Belgium are relatively progressive in that area, but if even more philosophical issues come up on the table, it will be difficult for the Christian Democrats to keep their true Catholic face."

 "Sammy Mahdi said that bluntly in 2020, then not yet the chairman of the CD&V. He did follow the lines that the party set out for years: there is no room for maneuver on ethical issues.


That is a modest concession, of course, because experts propose to increase the period from 12 to 18 or even 20 weeks. Still, the relaxation is an unexpected turn after years of standing on the barricades. 

Has the party become less conservative? According to political scientist Nicolas Bouteca (UGent), the party is mainly taking flight here. "By taking action themselves and not waiting for debates, they hope to land where they want. CD&V's proposal is still far below the bar of other coalition parties."
